Codage, café et escalade : le parcours de Cassandre, de la crosse à la programmation

Born in Canada and having spent her formative years in California, Cassandre's journey to Octasic has been shaped by a passion for computer science and a thirst for exploration.

From an early age, Cassandre showed interest in computers and programming. She attended high school and community college in California before moving back to Canada, delving into the world of C++ and assembly programming. Despite the majority of her contacts using Java, Cassandre was determined to carve her own path and explore a different programming language that has given her more control over system resources.

While in California, Cassandre played lacrosse in both high school and college. She parlayed that experience into coaching lacrosse part-time and traveling throughout the Bay Area, playing on gorgeous, well-appointed fields financed by the wealth of Silicon Valley.

Following two years at community college, Cassandre made her way back to Montreal to finish her college education. After winter break, her college held a career fair where many local companies exhibited as a way to find new candidates or interns for the summer break. Cassandre had heard of Octasic from her uncle, who works on the company’s hardware team. He had great things to say about the company, so when Cassandre saw the booth at the career fair she decided to explore the openings they had available.

Cassandre was interested in using her internship to apply the skills she’d already acquired and expand her learning while working with others who were experienced in the field. Octasic resonated with her desire for hands-on experience and real-world impact. While other companies were offering roles in web development or mundane office tasks, Octasic's proposition of working on tools integral to the company's backend compiler appealed to Cassandre's ambitions. Now, as an intern, Cassandre works on its tool development platforms and its compiler.

Work / Life Balance

Cassandre appreciates her position with Octasic. Unlike the stressful and micromanaged intern programs she encountered elsewhere, Octasic values work-life balance and provides the freedom to Cassandre to manage her time effectively. This approach enables her to immerse herself in her projects while still enjoying the activities she loves in her time away from the office.

Cassandre values the mentorship and support from her colleagues, who guide her through real-world applications of her academic curriculum. This is extremely helpful because otherwise Cassandre would need to spend hours learning how to do the work in a book or online. With their guidance she can do the work much faster. From workflow management to code quality checks, Cassandre's hands-on experience at Octasic has enriched her understanding of computer science in a tangible way.

In her spare time, Cassandre is a true adventurer. A former lacrosse player, she's transitioned to the dynamic world of bouldering and rock climbing since moving to Montreal. Bouldering's intricate problem-solving requirements and explosive movements have captured her interest. The challenge of constructing a puzzle-like climbing route resonates with her analytical mindset, and the sport provides a way to stay fit and engaged outside of work.

Cassandre's curiosity extends beyond technology and climbing walls. She's an avid café explorer, embarking on café runs with friends to discover the city's hidden gems while enjoying good company and conversation. This passion for exploration and community-building aligns with her professional approach to problem-solving and collaboration at Octasic.

Cassandre's story encapsulates the essence of embracing opportunities that align with one's passions and values. Her dedication to expanding her horizons in both the tech world and her personal pursuits is an inspiration to her colleagues and an embodiment of Octasic's commitment to fostering growth and innovation. As Cassandre continues her journey, we eagerly anticipate the achievements she'll unlock and the impact she'll make in the tech industry and beyond.
